The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that Seattle's "Sound Transit" board members have approved an additional $1 Million in funds for "unanticipated" geotechnical engineering related to the Beacon Hill light-rail tunnel. The project geotechnical firm is Shannon & Wilson. From SeattlePI:

Shannon & Wilson's additional geotechnical work dealt with unanticipated amounts of water found 160 feet below the surface of the hill.

The company helped Sound Transit devise a system to remove the water and stabilize the soil with a form of cement so that construction of the tunnel and the underground station could proceed, said light rail construction manager Dick Sage.

The amount authorized Thursday to Shannon & Wilson is "minor, compared to what we could have spent without their advice," Sage said.
