ASCE Geo-Institute Reports on Trends Affecting the Geo-Community

In July of 2007 a virtual who's who of the Geo-community gathered at the headquarters of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) for a workshop to discuss the Trends Affecting the Geo-community. Yesterday the ASCE released a report on the workshop titled: Trends Affecting the Geo-Community: What Does the Future Hold, edited by Peter Smeallie. More details after the break. The PDF Report contains recommendations in the form of 83 strategies and action items focused on educational and communication tasks to bring awareness and reform to geo-professional practice. From the Executive Summary, the purposes of the workshop were: To assemble experts from the geo-community and other disciplines to address external trends that impact the geo-community, To gain a better understanding of these issues, To develop proactive strategies and guidance, and To bring the expertise of the geo-community to these issues in order to improve the built environment. External industry trends addressed at the workshop were: Accelerated construction Geotechnical asset management Context sensitive issues Cost analysis Extreme events Innovative contracting Research and development Risk management Safety.
