WSDOT SR 519 Geofoam Photos on Flickr PDF Print E-mail

Geofoam blocks cover the ground between Third and Fourth Avenue S. in Seattle's SODO neighborhood. WSDOT is using Geofoam as a fill material to support the reconstruction of Third Avenue S., and the Royal Brougham Way bridge and a new pedestrian plaza.

I came across these great photos of geofoam use on the WSDOT SR 519 project which has been in service over a year now. They needed geofoam fill on the east and west bridge approaches because of high water table, poor soils and the need to reduce loading on existing buried utilities...all classic reasons for this type of geotechnical engineering solution.
