Mount Baker is one of the more active volcanos in the cascade range. According to a Seattle Post-Intelligencer article, there is renewed interest in this volcano. (Photo by Ataradrac)

According to Juliet G. Crider, an associate professor of geology at Western Washington University:

"Among the Cascade volcanoes, I would say it's one of the more active," she said. 'That doesn't mean an eruption is imminent, but it means it's interesting. Something is happening there."

The article reports that Baker last erupted 6,600 years ago, but that it has a longer eruption history than Mount St. Helens. The last recorded activity at Baker was in 1975 when it "blew off some steam". The event was not studied at all because of the dramatic erruption of Mt. St Helens 5 years later. Now, under a grant from the NSF, Crider's group is investigating the Volcano and the 1975 event.
