Europe's Nuclear Waste Connundrum

The German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources on Wednesday released a report indicating that a large chunk of northern Germany, and a bit of the south as well, is geologically suitable for the indefinite storage of highly radioactive nuclear waste. Read more for details. The study didn't focus on exact locations, but rather emphasized regional locations that are geologically suitable because of thick layers of clay buried at depth. The article discusses how the report is likely to touch off a firestorm of debate across Europe because of strong feelings about what should be done with radioactive nuclear waste (surprise).
