I recently came upon a link to an interesting emergency project in the Detroit Area. A 245' by 130' sinkhole opened up in August of 2004 as a result of the failure of an 11-ft diameter sewer sewer main located an amazing 60-ft below the ground surface! The remediation involved some very interesting geotechnical issues.

The project details and some additional photos can be found here.

The remediation involved stabilization with compaction grouting, de-watering, bypass lines (including pumps), a sheet-pile wall to project adjacent property, grouted soldier pile walls for excavation support and struts to brace the excavation sides against each other, special bulkheads for the pipes, and the construction of massive access shafts.

Be sure to check out the PDF version of their Power Point Presentation at the bottom of the project page.
